Cardiothoracic Surgery (Open Heart) UP Health System’s cardiac surgical teams perform hundreds of open heart surgeries every year. The Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship was established in 1983 in memory of Dr. Gerard Scanlon, an outstanding chest radiologist and teacher. As a large quaternary care center with nearly 1000 inpatient beds and imaging in a dozen ambulatory care sites, we perform over 700,000 exams a year across the Michigan Medicine enterprise, with a high intensity of pathology-rich case material. The Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center creates new opportunities to use the combined power of AI and imaging for biomarker discovery and improvements in population health, multisystem imaging to unlock the secrets of how external stress leads to brain activation that advances atherosclerosis and how to address the excess risk of cardiovascular disease among patients with cancer. The first year curriculum will immerse fellows in general cardiology, echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, cardiovascular imaging, heart failure, consultative cardiology, and electrophysiology. Staff physicians (radiologists and cardiologists) are experts in cardiac MRI and cardiac CT. Clinical activities are jointly shared between the Mass General Department of Cardiology and the Department of Radiology.
